What Helps?

In transition itself, patients need caregivers and spiritual guides capable of conveying a sense of reassurance and competence in dealing with the dark, sinister world. Emphatically, such guidance has nothing to do with magic and least of all with exorcistic practices. What helps, in my experience, is if I simply invoke the angels or, if a Christian patient, make the sign of the cross on a patient’s forehead or walk a protective circle around his bed, so that the inner child might intuitively understand the clearly symbolic protection. Sometimes it helps if I voice my own sense of the experienced symbolism: “You need a bridge now” or “This chasm is like a devouring dragon’s mouth. But you are safe inside and it will open up.” Most of all, however, I know from folktales and myths that the dark powers will become thoroughly transformed, symbolically, once the ego capitulates. In transition itself, patients need encouragement and the reassurance that change will happen.
